Anal sex - rinsing

Rinse your anus with water before you have anal sex.
Use an enema.

  • By having an enema before you have anal sex, you won’t be bothered by any faecal residue or odours
  • You will also reduce the risk of infection
  • An enema before you have anal sex reduces the chance of you feeling that you need to defecate half way through sex
  • If you eat healthily and have regular stools, anal sex doesn’t have to be messy. Washing yourself quickly beforehand is often enough
  • Having an enema every now and again won’t do you any harm. Always use clean water and don’t add anything; no soap, salt or disinfectant
  • If you use enemas regularly, you can damage the mucus in your anus. This leads to greater risk of STIs.
