Gonorrhoea (the clap) is a common STI.
If a man has gonorrhoea, he will notice a few days to two weeks after the unprotected sexual contact. He may have a yellowish-green or watery discharge from the urethra. Urination may be painful.
Women often don’t notice any signs at all. Sometimes they have more discharge than usual.
Even if you don’t know you have gonorrhoea, the infection can have serious effects, such as inflammation of the Fallopion tubes (in women) or the epididymis (in men).
Gonorrhoea is simple to cure if you catch it in time.
Gonorrhoea is caused by a bacteria. Gonorrhoea can cause an infection in the vagina, penis or rectum. As a result of oral sex (fellatio or cunnilingus), both men and women can have a gonorrhoea infection in their throat. Untreated gonorrhoea is contagious. It is therefore important that any partners with whom you have had unprotected sex are examined and if necessary, treated.
