Chlamydia is the most common STI in the Netherlands - 60,000 people get it each year. It is caused by bacteria in the mucous membranes of the genitals.
Both for men and for women, an untreated chlamydia infection is contagious and you can pass on the disease without knowing. This is why it is important that any partners with whom you have had unprotected sex should have themselves examined and treated if necessary.
Chlamydia can be very easily cured if you catch it in time.
Chlamydia can cause an inflammation of the urethra and the rectum and in women, the cervix. Women often notice no signs of a chlamydia infection. They may have no complaints, or only vague ones. Because of this, it is possible to harbour a chlamydia infection for a long time, sometimes even years. All that time you can pass on the disease without knowing. In men, the complaints are often more pronounced.
